Skittles Mosaics:
We are studying the world's first civilization. This was the Sumer Civilization. We are learning that a large part of the Sumerian culture was the creating of beautiful pottery & mosaics. They would then trade those pieces of art for other items that they needed such as weaponry or food. This was how the very first trading between civilizations & other cultures was developed. In this project students designed and created their own custom mosaics. This "mini project" was accompanied by a constructed response writing entry answering the question: How did the Sumerians & other cultures benefit from the trade of mosaics? We will continue to work hard on constructed response questions because they will be a large part of the student's EOGs for all four core subjects.
Project Key Question: How did the Sumerians & other cultures benefit from the trade of mosaics?
Focus Common Core Essential Standards:
6.G.1.2
Explain the factors that influenced the movement of people, goods and ideas and the effects of that movement on societies and regions over time (e.g., scarcity of resources, conquests, desire for wealth, disease and trade).
6.C.1.1
Analyze how cultural expressions reflected the values of civilizations, societies and regions (e.g., oral traditions, art, dance, music, literature, and architecture).
